3 Ways to Make Money Proofreading

Does looking for a way to cover the shortfall from your salary keep you awake at night?  Are you chronically exhausted from working nights and weekends to make ends meet? Do you end the school day thinking you just can’t take another day of teaching? In 3 Ways to Make Money Proofreading, I’ll show you how you can become a proofreader and break away from the classroom.

Proofreading can lead to better-paying work that won’t tax you physically. It can help you create a side hustle or a whole new career. It can also help you enjoy your life again instead of continuously wishing it away.

Should You Leave Teaching to Become a Proofreader?

If you’re like many teachers, you’re worn out, mentally exhausted, and ready to throw in the towel on your teaching career. You might want to earn some extra money, be thinking about easing into a career transition, or you might be ready to leave teaching altogether.

What Can Proofreading Do for You?

Proofreading can fill all these needs. If you learn to proofread at a professional level, you can use that skill to:

  • Work a part-time job that pays well and isn’t physically exhausting.
  • Develop a skill that is always in demand.
  • Start a new career.
  • Start a business.
  • Get out of the classroom.

Proofreading is a great career choice for teachers. If you need a side gig, it’s not physically exhausting and low-paid like ridesharing, working at a coffee shop or working in retail.

If you want a new profession, it doesn’t require long years of schooling. If you want to start a business, it’s a service that is always in demand.

Good proofreading can’t be done by computers. If a document is going to be perfect, it needs a human eye to look it over.

The trend today is for proofreaders to work remotely. The clients they’re working for could be on the other side of town, on the other side of the country, or on the other side of the world.

The good news here is that you are not limited to jobs in your local area. With your laptop, you can offer your services world-wide.

What Proofreaders Do

It’s been said that proofreaders add the final polish to a written document. You’ll be looking for any errors or omissions that were overlooked by the editor. You’ll main focus will be finding:

  • Errors in grammar
  • Punctuation problems
  • Spelling errors or incorrect word usage (such as there, their, they’re)
  • Style inconsistencies
  • Subject/Verb agreement

What You’ll Be Proofing

If it’s a printed document that others will read, it needs proofing. Some of the materials you could be asked to proof are:

  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Business papers and publications
  • Academic papers and journals
  • Technical papers and journals
  • Website pages

Can You Really Make Money Proofreading?

If you think proofreaders are the low people on the publishing totem pole, think again. Proofreaders are important, and that’s reflected in their salaries. According to the website Salary, professional proofreaders make salaries that range from $45,000 to $62,000 a year depending on their location and experience.

If you get a part-time proofreading job, it can pay between $12 and $20 an hour. As a freelancer, you can charge $25 or more. If you develop an expertise in a particular area, like technical or medical documentation, your rates can go even higher.
