Wealthy Affiliate Review – A Good Alternative for Teachers?

You know your subject inside and out.  You have this teaching gig down pat.  You sponsor clubs, tutor students before and after school, and serve on committees.  But, for lots of reasons, you may be wondering if it’s time for something different? That question shouldn’t make you feel as if you’re standing at the edge of the known world!  In Wealthy Affiliate Review – Is Wealthy Affiliate a Good Alternative for Teachers? I’ll walk you through everything you need to know before joining Wealthy Affiliate.

A Little Background

Once upon a time there was a woman who had raised her kids, and wanted to go back to school to complete her degree.

She lived in a place that had a great community college system. She hadn’t been in school for quite a while, so she started slowly; just a couple of classes a semester.

She discovered that she was an excellent student, much better than she had been back in high school. She also realized that not only could she keep up with her 18 and 19 year-old classmates, but she could also be friends with them and help them with their studies.  The best part was, she enjoyed it.

Somewhere along the way, she decided she needed to share all the wonderful knowledge she had been accumulating from her classes with others.  She decided to become a teacher.

The fact that her state was experiencing a severe teacher shortage had a lot to do with here decision.

The California Department of Education was advertising like crazy, encouraging folks to get their credentials and become highly sought-after, desperately needed teachers.  The only thing missing was Uncle Sam pointing his finger.

Well, she took the bait and had been accepted into a teacher’s credentialing program before the folding chairs at the graduation ceremony for her bachelor’s degree were back in storage.

Your Story

That’s a tiny piece of my story.  What’s yours?

  • You have your very own story of how and when you decided to become a teacher.
  • You may have been someone who knew exactly what you wanted to do with your life, and went right from high school into college.
  • Maybe, you came to the decision a bit more slowly. However you accomplished the feat, here you are.

Critical Mass

I don’t know if you’ve made it past the critical five year mark and plan to stay in the teaching profession, or you’ve decided there’s no way you’re going to spend the next 30 years of your life in a classroom.

You just have to get out of the classroom, perhaps out of education all together.  That’s not surprising.  After getting and undergrad degree and a teaching credential, up to 50% of teachers leave the profession before the end of their fifth year.

There are lots of things to consider, but unless you’re a person of independent means, you probably spend a lot of time wondering how you will replace your teaching salary.

Maybe you’re like me, and you’ve made it to retirement.   But,  with a mortgage payment, car payment, and raising two or three children, funds for an extra retirement account were scarce.

The Big Question

So, what do you do to fund the next chapter of your life.  There truly are a number of things you can do.

If you’re feeling frustrated about your situation, you may not see them right now.  But, with the variety of courses you’ve taken to get and maintain your credential, you have tons of skills.

Even if you still want to teach, you don’t have to stay in a classroom to do it.  An online business is a perfect option.

It’s very inexpensive compared to a brick and mortar business.  In some cases, you can get started with no out of pocket expenses.

Let me give you a couple of ideas.

Affiliate Marketing

You probably have contact with affiliate marketers all the time.  If you read a review of a product, and decide it’s just what you’re looking for, you probably clicked on the link to purchase that product.

Chances are excellent that an affiliate marketer had pulled together the information that helped make your buying decision so well-informed. That individual received a commission on your purchase.

It’s the same idea as purchasing a fragrance or pair of shoes from a department store. The salesperson who rings up your sale earns a commission.

It doesn’t affect the prices, it’s just part of the store’s cost of doing business.  The manufacturer or retailer has decided that working with affiliates helps get the product noticed by lots more potential customers than the company could on their own.

Want Some Examples?

How about:

  • Amazon
  • Sears
  • Walmart

All three of these well-known companies have large numbers of affiliate marketers helping folks find just the right product for their need.  It makes good sense for businesses to work with affiliates.

It’s also opened an excellent, low-cost path for people who want to own their own business.  And, while it’s true that you can do it all by yourself, why reinvent the wheel?

You invested in your education when you got your bachelor degree.  You invested in your education when you got your teaching credential. Why not invest in your education in affiliate marketing?

Marketing Your Own Product or Service

If you’ve been in the classroom for more than a year, I bet you already deal with one or two companies that market their own products.

I became a huge fan of a company called Señor Wooly during my last few years teaching.   The owner/creator started out by putting together short audios of chants to help his Spanish classes understand conjugations.  He’s built an amazing following in a few short years.  I’m not sure that would have happened without the internet and online marketing.

Teachers Pay Teachers is another company I helped support!  I can’t tell you how many times they helped me turn a ho-hum lessen into one that my students talked about for days.  The founders put together a platform that lets teacher’s sell their successful lesson plans to other teachers.

Why didn’t I think of that?

What About You?

What kinds of things could you offer online?  What about:

  • An E-book about your favorite topic, written and edited by you.
  • A how-to course explaining something you’ve been doing for years.
  • A subscription service covering great info you send out to an appreciative audience monthly.

And, these aren’t the only ways to make money online.  This comment from a Wealthy Affiliate Member may give you more ideas.

With imagination and a little effort, you can turn your online business into whatever you want it to be.

Concerns That May Be Holding You Back

Scammers

There are more than a few scammers out there.  Folks that are in it for the quick buck.  Folks that only have their own best interests at heart. Real fly-by-night operations.

Money Pits

Some companies that offer affiliate training are a veritable money pit.  They get you started, but withhold vital information until you pay for their next upgrade.  That can happen over and over again.

Who Can You Trust?

The company I’ve been depending on since early 2018 is Wealthy Affiliate.  They have an excellent reputation in the industry, and recently celebrated their 14th anniversary.

Kyle and Carson

Kyle and Carson, the same two guys who founded the company over 14 years ago, remain the heart and soul of Wealthy Affiliate today.  The only changes have been the constant improvements and upgrades made available to members on a regular basis.  The available suite of services are so impressive, that folk who are already successful in the online business world are moving to Wealthy Affiliate to take advantage of them.

The Starter Level

If you’re a teacher, I want to talk to you about the Stater Level.  There are two great reasons why the Starter Level is the perfect way to launch into your own online business.  First, it gives you everything you need to get yourself up and running in the online world.  You’ll get:

  • A  Free Website
  • Website Backup
  • Beginner Training Course
  • Personal Affiliate Blog
  • Affiliate Bootcamp Training, Phase 1
  • Video Walk-Throughs
  • Keyword Research Tool (30)
  • Training Classrooms (2)
  • Affiliate Program
  • Earn While You Learn

In addition, for the first 7 days you’ll have access to the Premium features of:

The Training

At the Starter Level, you’ll have access to the first 10 of the 50 lessons in the Online Entrepreneur Certification, or the first 10 of the 70 lessons in the Affiliate Bootcamp certification.

This is asynchronous, online training. It’s what you’re accustomed to using if you’ve taken online courses for your degrees or credentials.

What’s Your Specialty?

Wealthy Affiliate Review-Is Wealthy Affiliate Any Good for Teachers?
  • What’s the one thing you find so enchanting that you would do for free?
  • What topic can you start talking about and all concept of time disappears?
  • Many people today refer to it as your passion. What’s yours?

Whatever it may be, you can be sure other people are waiting for you to share your knowledge and expertise with them.

You can turn that expertise into a business.  Part-time or full-time, you decide. Your efforts and burning desire determine how big you grow your business.

Never Done This Before?

Don’t know anything about building a website?  No problem. There are lots of members who were in your shoes when they started.  Today, they are running million dollar businesses.

At Wealthy Affiliate, you’ll start with the basics and be guided through at your own pace.   From my experience, this is a great opportunity for teachers because of the standard teacher work schedule we typically enjoy.

We have:

  • Thanksgiving Break
  • Winter/Christmas Break
  • Spring Break
  • and the mother lode of all breaks, Summer Break

It’s possible to begin the training and get a business up and running during one of these down times.

What Wealthy Affiliate Is Not

Many individuals and companies would have you believe you can build a site and be earning hundreds of thousands of dollars in a few week’s time.

You can’t. The old adage “If something seems too good to be true, it is,” applies to an online business.  It’s not a get rich quick scheme.

You didn’t become the teacher you are today after an introduction to teaching course and a few weeks of student teaching.

Like anything else worth doing, if you put in the necessary time and care, you will build an amazing business.

A business built on your own terms. A business you can maintain anywhere in the world with your laptop and an internet connection.

  1. Hi Nancy

What an interesting good way to teach somebody about an alternative to a career in teaching or to be honest almost any career where you reach a crossroads and you wonder if you want to continue in that career. I’m actually married to a teacher for the past 35 years.  My sister is a teacher, so I have some insight into what it means to be a teacher. To be honest, my wife is an exceptional teacher, I don’t say that lightly.  She absolutely loves her job and gets great satisfaction out of it. Is that the case for all teachers? I don’t think so.  Teaching has changed to a more paperwork role as opposed to a teaching actual students role.   So, I can see that current or past teachers would be interested in learning about affiliate marketing and there is no better place to start than Wealthy Affiliate.  The training and support are first class! Pardon the pun!

The platform is full of genuine people willing to help in any way that they can for an aspiring affiliate marketer, some in fact are teachers, just go for it.

    • Congratulations to your wife for 35 years in teaching.  That’s a wonderful accomplishment.

There certainly is more paperwork than there used to be in the teaching field.  It creates a greater work-load, but often has no real positive impact on students.

I love your pun, and agree completely that Wealthy Affiliate is a wonderful place to begin a new career.

  3. Loving your WA review Nancy,

Makes me want to try WA all over again, very exciting reading back at what they have to offer! There are no better Online Business platforms to date and that’s coming from someone who’s joined multiple programs for a few years before finally stopping at WA.

WIth the power to create an Online Business of their own, teachers can definitely earn more than their own salary eventually and if they want, they can start their own tuition business too. Highly recommended for those serious in taking charge of their lives!

  4. My girlfriend is currently a teacher in a private school but she is facing some troubles with her hours as the school has reduced her hours during the last few months.

She is currently looking for alternate ways to make some more money and was thinking about teaching online as she has heard that other teachers are doing the exact same thing.

I’ll send her over your article right away as it may shed some light on how she is going to move forward with her teaching career.

    Thank you very much!

    • I’m sorry your girlfriend is facing reduced hours.  That really can cause all kinds of stress.  Online learning is a growing industry, and teaching online is certain something worth investigation.  I’ll be doing an article about a couple of teach online companies in the near future.

If she’s interested in a complete change of pace, I would suggest she take a look at my articles discussing virtual assisting and proofreading.  They can both be done from anywhere.  She’ll just need her laptop and an internet connection.

      She has lots of options!

  5. Hi Nancy, very inspirational article. I think that the Internet is full of useful resources that people can use for earning money online from home. I was a teacher 3 years ago but I was fired because of a “boss” friend who needed a job. From now on I am focused on my online business and I am very satisfied so far. Just like you mention, affiliate marketing is for anyone who wants passive income and which is most important it does not take a lot of investment.

    • Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the kind words.  I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your teaching job.  Even positions that appear to be “safe” can have unexpected surprises.

That’s one of the things to love about Wealthy Affiliate.  No one can fire you!  It’s your business, and you can run it as you see fit.  You have complete freedom.

All reasons why I believe it’s a great option for teachers.  They can keep it small, or grow it into their own full-time piece of the pie.

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it.

      Best regards,

  6. Hello Nancy! Great article and if I wasn’t a Wealthy Affiliate University student for the fifth year, then reading this article would seriously throw an eye at that offer.

In the long term, by acting honestly in the affiliate marketing field, overcoming laziness and seeing success only after time, it is a real investment, both in terms of money and enjoyable business.

    • What a great point you’ve brought up.  Wealthy Affiliate is not a get-rich-quick scheme.  It’s a legitimate opportunity to create a valuable service for others.

You also mentioned two reasons why it’s a great fit for teachers.  First, teachers are some of the hardest working individuals I know.  Putting in the effort to get their own business going would be no problem for them.

Second, teachers sometimes never see the results of their hard work.  Giving their website a little time to produce good results will be a familiar concept to them!

Thanks so much for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!

  7. Hi, Nancy.
You opened up the memory lane with the brisk walk on Wealthy Affiliate Review.
I have been the sincere Premium Member of Wealthy Affiliate from past one year and referred a few teachers to the system. I know teachers can make a big success by adopting their subject as their niche topic, helping a number of people online who can not afford regular classes.

Actually, it all depends on the viewpoint of how they look at this opportunity. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

  8. I looked at this program a while back, but was very disappointed. It seemed that there were tons of people paying $49 per month, month after month, while “hoping” to make some money “some day.” Of the hundreds of posts I looked at from other members, I never saw one by anybody actually making a living–or even making any money at all–in this. It was always the same: I’ll make some money some day, one of these days, in time, etc.
