doTerra MLM Review

If you like the idea of using aromatherapy and totally natural ingredients to enhance your health and appearance, you might be intrigued by the opportunity to sell doTerra oils and personal care products. There’s evidence that aromatherapy and oils can help lift your mood, ease painful symptoms of certain illnesses and make your hair and skin glow. My doTerra MLM Review will give you the information you need to decide if you should start a business that helps you help others find natural healing. I’m ready if you are!

What is doTerra?

doTerra is a Utah-based company that produces and sells oils and oil-based personal care products. The doTerra product line includes pure essential oils that are organically sourced and certified pure. The oils come from all over the world. The company claims it is ”changing the world one drop at a time.”

The company has been in business since 2008. It was started by a group of executives who had previously worked at Young Living, the other well-known essential oil MLM. A privately held company, doTerra is headquartered in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

Here’s a quick look into the culture of doTerra.

What Are Essential Oils?

They are the fragrance and essence of a flower, herb, plant, fruit or vegetable that has been extracted and distilled. An essential oil is a highly concentrated version of the plant.

Traditionally, they have been used to make things like scented stationery, and potpourri, perfumes and air fresheners.

They are extremely popular among natural healers, naturopaths and other people looking for alternative healing approaches. Some people believe they have true healing properties. Others say they like the pure, clean fragrances of these oils.

How Do You Use the Oils?

Every one of the company’s essential oils comes with a full explanation of its benefits.

There are several ways to incorporate oils into your daily routine.

  • As aromatherapy: This is the most common way people use oils. Inhaling the fragrance of a particular plant can calm you down, give you energy, lift your spirits, help you sleep or allow you to focus at work.
  • As a soothing bath: Place a few drops of the oil in your bath water.
  • On your skin: Put a few drops of essential oil into a bottle of a carrier oil like coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil. You’ve created a soothing oil you can rub into your skin or your hair.
  • As capsules: doTerra is one of the few essential oil companies that sells oil-based oral supplements.
  • In a diffuser: The company sells diffusers that make it easy and convenient to diffuse healing, beneficial oils into the air around you all day or night.

Are doTerra Products Worth the Money?

The company sells individual oils that are the pure essence of various herbs and flowers. They also sell specialty packages that include a complete set of oils grouped together for a specific purpose.

For instance, they have the Precious Florals collection, which gives you the most popular floral oils in an attractive wooden box.

Unlike some oil companies, this one also sells oils in formulas that you can take orally. The Lifelong Vitality Pack gives you three supplements that “are the optimal daily dose of vitamins, minerals, omega-3, antioxidants and oils, plus a vitality blend for energy support and lifelong wellness.”

Yarrow Pom Skin Complex is an oral supplement that includes yarrow root, pomegranate and other oils.

Be prepared for some sticker shock.

The products are pretty expensive, and I’m not sure the company can justify those prices.

That might make the products hard to sell. If you live in an area where people are into natural healing and have a lot of disposable income, you might be able to build up a steady clientele. Otherwise, you’re going to have a very hard time.

doTerra’s Salon Essentials Root to Tip SerumdoTerra MLM Review-Serum

This is a smoothing, glossing serum that promises to remove frizz, make your hair shine and condition it. It’s similar to the glossing and shine formulas you can find in your local drugstore’s hair care aisle. For instance, I swear by Garnier’s Whole Blends 10-in-1 Miracle Nectar Leave-In Treatment. I have a friend with curly hair who can’t live without John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Extra Strength Serum.

Both of these products work great, have similar ingredients and retail for $10 or less at the drugstore. They’re a similar blend of silicones and natural oils.

The Salon Essentials product also works well, but not noticeably better than those inexpensive brands. It has similar ingredients. It also sells for $46.67 for a one ounce bottle. That’s a huge markup.

doTerra Oils doTerra MLM Review - Blue Tansy Oil

What about the oils? Well, a bottle of essential oil of Blue Tansy, a Mediterranean flower said to produce a sense of well-being, goes for $113 for a 5-milliliter bottle. That’s a big price tag for a tiny bottle.

A quick Google search shows the same product for less than half the price at Planttherapy.com.

I can’t tell you if it’s any different because I wasn’t going to spend more than $100 for it!

The doTerra MLM Opportunity

The doTerra Policy Manual notes that there are two ways to make money as a SeneGence Distributor.

  • Sales Income
  • Commission Income

You can see from the chart below that both Wholesale Customers and Wellness Advocates earn the 25% discount. As a Wellness Advocate, you then have some flexibility in how much you markup the products to sell to your customers.

There are also eligibility requirements depending on where you’re at on the Advocate scale. It is possible to earn bonuses on top of your commissions, but it’s a complicated maze of information to sort through.

doTerra ProductsdoTerra MLM Review - Oil collection

The company’s product line includes:

  • Oils sold singly.
  • Themed essential oil boxes that include several bottles.
  • Personal care products that contain oils including shampoo, soap, conditioner, body lotion and deodorant.
  • Oral supplements that contain edible oils.

I don’t personally believe these oils have real medicinal value, but I enjoy the fragrances and the pure, organic formulas.

How Much Does It Cost to Join doTerra?

It costs $35 to sign up. You must also pay a yearly $25 renewal fee.

In addition, you must purchase an initial wholesale kit of products to sell. There are several options ranging in price from a simple $150 starter kit to a Diamond Enrollment Kit for $2750.

Can You Make Money With doTerra?

According to user reviews, many people sign up not to make a profit, but simply to save money on their own oils and products. That’s because there are two types of representatives.

As wholesale customers, they get discounts on the company’s products. Several reviewers said they signed up for that reason and were able to recoup their initial investment in a few months. For them, it’s worth it to save money on the products they enjoy using.

As wellness advocates, they get those discounts in addition to a free website where they can sell the products. Wellness Advocates get a 25% commission on everything they sell.

If that sounds good, consider that according to doTerra’s own numbers, more than half their distributors have no downline, meaning they only make commissions on what they personally sell. The majority of these distributors made less than $400 a year.

Some reviewers said it took six months to a year to get back the cost of their initial investment.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • The products are good quality and organically sourced.
  • Natural, organic products are extremely popular right now.
  • The company has a high rate of repeat and retained customers.

Cons

  • The products are very expensive.
  • It can take a long time to make back your initial investment.
  • You must develop a downline to make a good income.

Final Thoughts

I had to dig to figure out exactly how many folks selling doTerra are making any money. Part of the reason is the very complicated bonus and commission structure they have in place. According to one document I found, it appears that only 23% of what doTerra calls Business Builders are making any money. Of the 23% that are making money, here’s the breakdown of the average annual income by percentage of Business Builder:

  • 62% of the 23% earned $27,557
  • 21% of the 23% earned $58,509
  • 7% of the 23% earned $112,965
  • 7% of the 23% earned $201,764
  • 2% of the 23% earned $463,555
  • Less than 1% of the 23% earned $1,259,587

This is a solid company that makes quality products, but it’s highly unlikely you’re going to make serious money with this MLM.

Sixty-two percent of the folks actually making any money aren’t making what most people consider a living wage. I don’t know about you, but unless you live on your own with no obligations, $27,557 annually doesn’t go very far.

If you have a few customers who have deep pockets and an interest in oils, you might be able to supplement your income. Otherwise, it sounds like this is more of a hobby than an actual money-making opportunity.

It’s the same problem that plagues many cosmetic and personal care MLMs. The products are good, but they’re too expensive to sell in large quantities.

  1. I once pursued a MLM organization, and it was not worth it. It is only for the creators to get rich and for you to work hard for minimal award. The one you recommend seems interesting though. I have to look more into it, but what is the one reason you recommend wealthy affiliate the most?

    • I’m glad you asked!  Wealthy Affiliate provides an amazing number of features, including world-class training, in affiliate marketing.  With this solid base, anyone can be in business for him or herself.  As you said, with an MLM, only the creators are the winners.  With your own affiliate business, there is no need to constantly be building downlines and making someone else wealthy!  Everything you put into your affiliate business is yours!

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!
