TEFL is an acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. As an online TEFL teacher, you could be teaching one-on-one classes, or small groups of students.
The demand for TEFL teachers is high. Over one billion individuals world-wide are learning to speak English. This makes teaching English to non-English speakers one of the fastest growing areas of education.
Besides being a high demand industry, it’s also very flexible. When you teach, and where you teach, are entirely up to you. As long as you have a computer and an internet connection, the world is your oyster!
Types Of Jobs
Depending on where in the world you’re teaching, and the needs of your students, there are likely numerous configurations for teaching English. However, the two most common are Language Schools run by a company, and setting up your own private tutoring students.
Language Schools versus Private Tutoring
Many people get their start by working for one of the large English language companies. Three reasons you may want to take this route are:
- Company provided curriculum
- Learning management systems, like Blackboard, are provided
- Salaries are based on a published scale
Companies use several criteria for determining salaries. If you are a credentialed teacher, you’ll be able to check off most of these. It can vary for different companies, but the list can include:
- Prior teaching experience
- Current teaching credentials
- College degree
- TEFL certificate
- Student reviews
Student reviews are huge.
Companies ask their students to rate their teachers. The students, and their parents if they’re young, will give their input on how well your lessons measured up to their expectations.
It’s a bit like the system used in ancient Greece. If the students felt they had learned enough, they paid the teacher. If not, the teacher went home empty-handed.
The more your students like you, the more money you’re going to get for your efforts. Part of your training at ITA will teach you the skills you need to ensure everyone is happy at the end of the lesson.
Besides more money, high student ratings can lead to more opportunities within the company. If you’re accustomed to a public school pay scale, this one may take a little time to register.
The more effort you put into your students and their lessons, the more the company is going to reward you. That can include advancement within the company, as well as other incentives.
Even though most companies offer a great deal of flexibility with regards to number of hours worked, there’s just something about being your own boss. Of course, it depends on what you are looking for, but here are the main differences between contracting with a company and doing your own thing:
- You will have lots more flexibility in curriculum and materials used
- You’ll spend more time preparing for lessons
- You’ll be responsible for recruiting your students
Of course, there is no reason why you can’t do both. You can set up hours with a company for part of the day, or for specific days of the week, and fill in the remaining time you want to work with private tutoring jobs. You could even donate some of those private tutored lessons if you felt inclined to.
This list could vary by company, but it will be similar to this one.
- Laptop or desktop computer
- Camera or HD on computer
- Headset with microphone
- Good lighting
- You want to ensure that your students can see you and any props you use
- Professional backdrop
- A screen or blank wall with language posters is good. You just don’t want students focusing on your dog sleeping on the couch instead of you and the lesson.
It’s also been noted that most companies now require a wired connection versus WiFi. It’s not unusual for them to have upload and download speeds that you must adhere to as well.
Most schools want college grads, but not all. If you do have a degree, it doesn’t have to be in education. There is an established standard that you need to meet to be eligible to teach English in non-English speaking countries.
- At least 100 hours of coursework. (The ITA online course provides 150 hours)
- 6-20 hours of live, observed, practice-teaching to non-native English speakers (ITA provides 20 hours)
- An accredited curriculum recognized by an independent organization
- Qualified instructors with the equivalent of an MA in TESOL or a related field
According to information discussed during an information session for ITA, beginning September 2019, teachers working for language schools based in China must have 120 hours of TEFL certification or a state teaching credential.
