TEFL Overview

TEFL is an acronym for Teaching English as a Foreign Language.  As an online TEFL teacher, you could be teaching one-on-one classes, or small groups of students.

The demand for TEFL teachers is high.  Over one billion individuals world-wide are learning to speak English.  This makes teaching English to non-English speakers one of the fastest growing areas of education.

Besides being a high demand industry, it’s also very flexible.  When you teach, and where you teach, are entirely up to you.  As long as you have a computer and an internet connection, the world is your oyster!

Types Of Jobs

Depending on where in the world you’re teaching, and the needs of your students, there are likely numerous configurations for teaching English.  However, the two most common are Language Schools run by a company, and setting up your own private tutoring students.

Language Schools versus Private Tutoring

Companies

Many people get their start by working for one of the large English language companies.  Three reasons you may want to take this route are:

  • Company provided curriculum
  • Learning management systems, like Blackboard, are provided
  • Salaries are based on a published scale

Companies use several criteria for determining salaries.  If you are a credentialed teacher, you’ll be able to check off most of these.  It can vary for different companies, but the list can include:

  • Prior teaching experience
  • Current teaching credentials
  • College degree
  • TEFL certificate
  • Student reviews

Student reviews are huge.

Companies ask their students to rate their teachers. The students, and their parents if they’re young, will give their input on how well your lessons measured up to their expectations.

It’s a bit like the system used in ancient Greece.  If the students felt they had learned enough, they paid the teacher.  If not, the teacher went home empty-handed.

The more your students like you, the more money you’re going to get for your efforts.  Part of your training at ITA will teach you the skills you need to ensure everyone is happy at the end of the lesson.

Besides more money, high student ratings can lead to more opportunities within the company.  If you’re accustomed to a public school pay scale, this one may take a little time to register.

The more effort you put into your students and their lessons, the more the company is going to reward you.  That can include advancement within the company, as well as other incentives.

Private Tutor

Even though most companies offer a great deal of flexibility with regards to number of hours worked, there’s just something about being your own boss.  Of course, it depends on what you are looking for, but here are the main differences between contracting with a company and doing your own thing:

  • You will have lots more flexibility in curriculum and materials used
  • You’ll spend more time preparing for lessons
  • You’ll be responsible for recruiting your students

Of course, there is no reason why you can’t do both.  You can set up hours with a company for part of the day, or for specific days of the week, and fill in the remaining time you want to work with private tutoring jobs.  You could even donate some of those private tutored lessons if you felt inclined to.

Device Requirements

This list could vary by company, but it will be similar to this one.

  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • Camera or HD on computer
  • Headset with microphone
  • Good lighting
    • You want to ensure that your students can see you and any props you use
  • Professional backdrop
    • A screen or blank wall with language posters is good.  You just don’t want students focusing on your dog sleeping on the couch instead of you and the lesson.

It’s also been noted that most companies now require a wired connection versus WiFi.  It’s not unusual for them to have upload and download speeds that you must adhere to as well.

Educational Requirements

Most schools want college grads, but not all.  If you do have a degree, it doesn’t have to be in education.  There is an established standard that you need to meet to be eligible to teach English in non-English speaking countries.

  • At least 100 hours of coursework.  (The ITA online course provides 150 hours)
  • 6-20 hours of live, observed, practice-teaching to non-native English speakers (ITA provides 20 hours)
  • An accredited curriculum recognized by an independent organization
  • Qualified instructors with the equivalent of an MA in TESOL or a related field

According to information discussed during an information session for ITA, beginning September 2019, teachers working for language schools based in China must have 120 hours of TEFL certification or a state teaching credential.

Why International TEFL Academy?

Language Schools want the most qualified teachers for their students.  ITA is involved in all aspects of the industry and provides training, resources, and contacts for their students.

For starters, ITA is a highly rated company.  This includes:

  • GoAbroad.com     9.75/10
  • GoOverseas.com  9.3/10
  • Google reviews     4.7/5
  • BBB                       A+ rating

When you’re enrolled with ITA, you not only work with an admissions’ advisor, but a job search guidance advisor as well.  The training can be great, but if it can’t be translated into a job, you didn’t get value for your money.

With International TEFL Academy, you’ll enjoy:

  • Resume and cover letter assistance
  • Personalized job search advice
  • Job search resources
  • Training and workshops
  • Job assistance for life

There is also a strong alumni network available to students.  You’ll have access to 80 country-specific Facebook groups, and an alumni group on Instagram.

ITA is also run by folks who have real-life experience.  They’ve lived abroad and taught English to non-English speakers.  They know the pitfalls and the rewards.  Who else would you want preparing you for the next journey of your life?

Instead of reading more about it, take a minute to listen to why students are choosing ITA for their TEFL certification.

  1. I was seriously looking into doing TEFL course and teach English in Vietnam and slowly travel my way around Asia..but I didn’t know you can teach it online as well. I noticed you don’t need as many course hours for an online teaching as you do for a face to face, which is nice 🙂

Hmmm, I think I have some thinking to do..

    Thanks for this info,

    Katya

    • Hi Katya,  Your plan to travel as you teach is fabulous!  What a delightful lifestyle, and completely doable.  Teaching online opens up amazing opportunities.

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!  All the best.

  2. I have always wondered about teaching english jobs and how they work. I know there are many people that leave and go live in China to teach English. It would be a nice experience to go live in another country and teach english. Now, this is a great thing you are showing here for Teach English and Thrive Course. When somebody buys this course they have so many ways to earn an income from home. It sounds like this course is well worth the money for anybody that wants to teach english.

    • I agree that teaching abroad sounds fun, and living in China would really be exciting.  The great part is that ITA students are having great success with their TEFL certifications.

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!

  3. Wow! I must say that I enjoyed every bit of this information provided on this post. Teaching English has become a very lucrative offer and most companies would pay quite a huge amount of money just to get a teacher with TEFL certification. Though I tried teaching online some years back, but due to the fact that I do not have a TEFL certificate, most do not recruit me. I love this offer by international TEFL academy and the pricing seems high but considering the benefits attached to the certification, I guess it is worth given a trial. Thanks

    • The cost is a bit more than some of the other companies, but I believe there is real value there, and well worth the price.  They are highly rated by several respected groups, and have tons of satisfied customers.   I agree it would be worth a trial.

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!

  4. Wow, this is a really nice post. I’m not sure I want to go into TEFL but j have a cousin in college who is studying English language and loves to teach. I’m sure shell like this idea and follow up with ita to see recommendations and check if its ideal for her. I think it is true that English teachers with TEFL is high on demand and if one can attain a certificate then jobs are very well ready with good pay check. Overall, nice post here.

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the post and will let your cousin know about them.  I know she’ll like what she sees on the ITA website.  I’ve been following them for several years, and am very impressed with this company.

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!

  5. Hi!  Thanks for the article on this course!  I had considered teaching English as a Foreign Language before but never knew how to get started.  Plus I heard those people who travel abroad and do it while traveling don’t often make much.  But doing it online this way looks like an awesome way to make extra money.  Especially if you’re a teacher (or former teacher).  Thanks for the excellent review of this great looking online academy.

    • Thanks for the kind words.  You brought up an important point.  It can be very difficult to get a good situation if you try to make arrangements once you’ve left your home country.  There are lots of arrangements, both large and small, and having an experienced person clear the path is quite helpful.

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!

  6. This is a very good expository post. I like the idea that one can make some good cash from teaching ones native language. Having companies who are ready to employ you makes it a very attracting job, although starting as a private body may not be simple. But, I believe with the rate at which some countries are in need of people to teach English language, it wouldn’t be much of a problem. I’ll definitely past this information across to others.

    • This does seem to be a growing market.  There’s a need for many more teachers to teach English.  And, as you mentioned, being able to benefit from one’s own language makes this an appealing opportunity.

I’m glad you enjoyed the article.  Thanks so much for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!

  7. When you think about our educational system and all the different subjects & classes listed, more should include the study of the english language that could benefit foreign students enrolled. There are many countries out there, where the residents speak little english or no english at all. I personally feel good english tutors will be so helpful among the student body. More academies like yours should be placed throughout college states to help foreigners elevate their knowledge regarding language skills.

    • You bring up interesting points.  Just like everything else in life, if you’re not interested in a subject or topic, it won’t matter how much assistance is offered or how good the tutor.  If you have students anxious to learn, anything you do will be appreciated and useful.

In the U.S., students are taking classes because of requirements, not because they value the classes.  I think amazing things will be done in education when students are free to create their own study plans.  If that doesn’t happen, we’ll continue to see a lot of wasted time, money, and energy.

Thanks so much for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!
