General Proofreading and Transcript Proofreading – What’s the difference?

First, let’s be sure we both mean the same thing when we use the term proofreading. In its basic form, when you proofread you are carefully reading a document with the goal of checking it for errors.

These errors could be spelling or grammar errors or factual errors specific to the document. In the process of reading, you mark the document in a way that will allow the writer to make all necessary corrections.

Proofread Anywhere. Proofread Anywhere offers two distinct courses, General Proofreading and Transcript Proofreading. Either one would be perfect for the individual with good word skills. If you enjoy reading and grammar, you’re going to love this opportunity. If you have an eye for detail, and constantly proofread everything you read, you’re going to love this.

Let’s take a look at both courses individually.

Transcript Proofreading

Who is this for?

  • Anyone who has a good eye for typographical errors
  • Anyone who has a good understanding of English grammar
  • Someone who want to work with court reporters and legal documents

This is billed as a rigorous program and it is! There are nine modules that consist of 60 units of training that cover theory, practice of that theory, and exams.

You will need to pass the exams before you can continue to the next level. This is a serious program, and once you’ve successfully completed it, you should be well-prepared to begin your business.

The Four Levels

  • Beginner Basecamp
    • Introduction to Transcript Proofreading in 7 units
  • 30-Day Jumpstart
    • Indepth study of transcripts in 9 units
  • Next Steps
    • Marking up transcripts and practice
  • Launch and Earn
    • Learn to communicate with court reporters and market your business

How Good Are These Courses?

Let’s face it. Any type of program is only as good as the person or people who run the training. I’m convinced that when you sign up for either of these trainings with Proofread Anywhere, you’re signing up with a first-class organization.

I’ve been receiving materials from them for several months now, including emails from Caitlin. I believe she is well-versed on the subject of proofreading, and has the track record to back up her claims.

Both the General Proofreading and the Transcript Proofreading courses were developed from Caitlin’s own experience. She teachers you everything she knows. It should make you feel comfortable knowing that in one year alone, she made $43,000 working on a part-time basis in Transcript Proofreading.

Benefits

The dedication of the staff to your success is probably the biggest benefit to you. If you bring a desire to learn and the willingness to do the work, they do the rest. You’ll be taking advantage of a program that teaches everything you’ll need to know  be a highly-educated proofreader, ready to launch your own business.

The other giant benefit of this course is the pay-as-you-go format available to Transcript Proofreading students. Proofread Anywhere does not charge you for the entire program up front.

If you’ve ever signed up for a course and then discovered it wasn’t for you, it could be a problem getting refunds. After all, most schools pro-rate the cost of the course. If you’ve completed too much, or you need to take a break, you’re stuck.

Not so with Proofread Anywhere. You pay for one level at a time. Once you successfully complete it, then, and only then, do you move on to the next.

Support

You’re going to receive a thorough, well-thought-out, tested program. If you take the training seriously, invest the time you need to understand and master each step, you’re going to learn how to do proofreading right.

My experience has been that the staff is very available and responsive to emails. In addition, you will have access to the Facebook page and lots of assistance from present and past students. There’s a real family atmosphere there that makes the task of learning lots more pleasant. You never have to feel you’re doing it all by yourself.

  1. Hi Nancy,

I have been looking in to ways of earning money online, with a view to be flexible. This is so I can do it anywhere and at anytime. Proofreading is one that I wasn’t aware of until reading your post. I was wondering how much money a proofreader would make after completing the necessary course?

    • Proofreading is definitely an option if you want to work anywhere and anytime that’s convenient for you.  Like everything else, how much an individual makes at proofreading can vary.  If you’re great at what you do, you’ll make more money than some one who is sloppy, or just not very motivated.

That said, it appears you can start at between $1500 to $2000 per month pretty easily, and then grow fairly rapidly from there.  I’m attaching this link for you.   In it, Caitlin, of Proofread Anywhere, gives lots of information, including a month by month view of income that shows her annual income of $43,000.   The same link also gives examples from other proofreaders that should help you decide if this is something you want to explore further.

I wish you the very best on your journey.  Thanks for joining the conversation.  I appreciate it!
