Matilda Jane MLM Review

Could you spend hours wandering between the racks of adorable childrens’ clothing at your local department store? Are you sometimes tempted to buy something just because it’s so cute (even though you don’t know a soul who could wear it)? Becoming a Trunk Keeper for Matilda Jane Clothing may be your dream come true. In Matilda Jane MLM Review, I’ll help you weigh the pros and cons before those fanciful little outfits can dazzle you.

What is Matilda Jane?

Matilda Jane, or Matilda Jane Clothing is a multi-level marketing company that has been marketing women’s and childrens’ clothing and accessories since 2005. These items are sold through parties hosted by Janes, or hosts, and presented by Trunk Keepers, or consultants/representatives. Founded by Denise DeMarchis, she is also the designer. The privately held company is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The company’s current CEO is Jeff Blade. In addition to the U.S. website, Matilda Jane also has a Matilda Jane Canada website.

This video showcasing a 2018 collection will give you a quick preview of Matilda Jane designs.

Are Matilda Jane Products Worth the Money?

If you’ve never seen Matilda Jane Clothing before, prepare yourself. You’re going to be greeted by lots of whimsical colors, designs, and fabric combinations. In other words, exactly the type of clothing little girls fall in love with. I suspect Ms. DeMarchis has the most fun with the girl’s designs.

The girl’s collections feature ruffles, laces and sweet little edgings. It’s also easy to mix and match the separates thanks to the color combinations used. The line features fun designs for boys too.

The women’s line tones down most of the whimsy in exchange for casual comfort. However, if you’re feeling a twirly girl day coming on, you can find a few bold stripes, florals and sweet touches among the day to day casual.

You can certainly go online and find sellers with similar styles for less. The pricing at Matilda Jane does lean toward the high end if you’re buying more than one outfit, or for more than one child at a time. Most customers give them a thumbs up for quality.

What you’re really paying for here is style, and you have to decide if a woman’s pair of cute, warm-weather pajamas are worth $72, or a little girl’s ice cream print tunic is worth $42, or and adorable baby’s dress and leggings combination are worth $74.

The biggest complaint among customers regarding the pricing is the fact that most of the pieces are currently being made in China.

The Matilda Jane Clothing MLM Opportunity

Like virtually all other MLM company opportunities, the Matilda Jane Clothing MLM opportunity offers two main ways to make money:

  • Setting up trunk shows and selling Matilda Jane clothing and accessories to your own customers.
  • Recruiting and building a team to sell Matilda Jane clothing to their customers.Matilda Jane MLM Review - Commission Chart

As you can see from the sales requirements on the chart:

  • Everything is based on commissionable sales volume which is referred to as CSV.
  • All refunds and soldouts are deducted from your sales before payment is made.

There are a few more exceptions that you can read on the chart below. However, these three pieces of information are notable:

  • A Jane is the Matilda Jane name for a customer who hosts a party.
  • A Trunk Keeper, or TK is you, the Matilda Jane representative.
  • You must sell a minimum CSV of $8,000 and have 4 months of “Active” status during the selling season for you to return the following season as a TK.

To get started, you simply sign up online.

How Much Does it Cost to Join Matilda Jane?

As a Matilda Jane Trunk Keeper, you’re going to need a well-stocked trunk to get your boutique set up and ready for customers. Your startup kit will include:

  • Inventory of assorted girl’s clothing items and accessories. (There is no mention of how many items of clothing or sizing you’ll receive.)
  • Promotional items
  • Marketing materials
  • Racks
  • Hangers.

Your initial investment for these items currently costs $1600. The company literature does note that they have financing available and payment plans to make getting your Matilda Jane business up and running a little easier.

Can You Make Money with Matilda Jane?

As you saw in the chart above, You must sell a minimum CSV of $1,500 per month to be considered “Active” as a TK. You can also make an additional 5% bonus if you meet the following requirements in your first season:

  • $5,500 in your first month.
  • $4,500 in your second month.
  • $3,500 in your third month.
  • $2,500 in your fourth month.
  • $2,500 in your fifth month.

Time for a Little Math.

Selling $1,500 per month at 20% commission puts $300 in your pocket.

If you meet all of the bonus quotas, and are paid at a 25% rate on the required total of $18,500, you’ll have earned $4625 for five month’s worth of effort. That works out to $925 per month. I’ll let you figure out the hourly rate.

Profiting from MLM is No Longer Viable

Network marketers are switching from MLM to affiliate marketing because it is a more sustainable way to earn revenue online.

I am using this one strategy to operate my affiliate business which include all the support and tools needed to run a six figure a year business.

Matilda Jane has two to three seasons each year. Your quota the second season is similar to your first season. Things change in the third season. You’ll be expected to earn:

  • $2,000 more the first month
  • $1,000 more each month for the remaining four months.

You will receive one grace month per season. However, if you miss quotas for more than that one month per season, you are at risk of losing your active status.

If you’ve been busy building a team while meeting these quotas, as a Senior Trunk Keeper you’ll be rewarded with:

  • 3% sales commissions on your First Line TKs with a monthly CSV of at least $1,000.
  • 2% sales commissions on your Second Line TKs with a monthly CSV of at least $1,000.
  • 1% sales commissions on your Third Line TKs with a monthly CSV of at least $1,000.

Matilda Jane also has a long list of items you’ll be expected to do to ensure the TKs on your team have the best shot at meeting all of the quotas too!

What’s required here is that you get very very good at wearing two hats, and train your team members to do the same. While meeting your sales quotas, you will be required to constantly recruit and consistently train everyone on your team. You’ll be holding individual and group meetings, and attending and critiquing the trunk shows held by the individuals on your team.

This will take a lot of time and excellent scheduling skills to make it all happen. The reality of how much work is involved in getting an MLM business off the ground and the skills needed to make that happen, come as a shock to most people.

Final Thoughts

I like this company. I think Ms. DeMarchis is a very talented lady, and I find her designs imaginative and appealing. I do have concerns about the MLM opportunity!Matilda Jane MLM Review - Glassdoor Chart

Looking at the Glassdoor reviews, you find comments that indicate a lack of confidence in upper management by corporate employees. If you check the Glassdoor chart on your right, you’ll see that only 22% of the folks reviewing the company would recommend it to a friend.

This is important, because these are the people making business decisions that affect you and your income directly.

No matter how much they hype the Sisterhood aspect of Matilda Jane, and how often you’re told it’s your business, it’s not.

Your opinion on how things should be handled at corporate will never be solicited. You will always be required to play by their rules and never participate in creating or modifying those rules. MLM companies can and do make changes regularly to their business models and the commission structures. You work to build a team, work to replace those who drop out, and keep them all trained.

What you don’t get to do is make any of the decisions that affect the direction taken by the company.

If you’re a mom who plans to work only a few hours while your kids are at school, take a closer look at what’s involved in making more than a couple of hundred dollars each month. All those trunk shows you’ll be holding will require many hours of planning and follow up. It’s not just the time you’ll spend conducting the party.

If you’re planning to build a team to maximize your profits, keep in mind that on average 50% of all people joining an MLM are gone within the first 12 months. You will need to constantly recruit new people to fill the gap left by people who didn’t realize how much time and effort is required.

An Alternative to Multi-Level Marketing

Do you just like shopping for cute girl’s clothing, or do you really want your own business? Do you have design ideas of your own, and need an outlet for all those great creations?

If you have a dream of building your own business, consider building a sustainable, online business that can grow even while you sleep, go to the movies, or take a vacation. If this sounds more doable than constantly booking parties, recruiting and training new reps, take a look at my #1 recommendation for building an online business. These folks provide wonderful web hosting, amazing tools, and they teach you everything you’ll need to know.

If offering adorable childrens’ clothing is your chosen path, you can do that with your own online business.

If designing clothing creations for women and their children is your chosen path, you can do that.

If you have a completely different idea, you can market that through your own online business too.

  • You won’t have to meet someone else’s quotas
  • You won’t have to worry about recruiting and training anyone.
  • You won’t be limited to offering products from just one vendor.

Let your imagination take flight, and let your own online business take you in any direction you choose!

Take a look for yourself, and see what you think. There’s no cost, and no obligation to see for yourself.

  1. I didn’t know too much about this company or their products. Thanks for the insight. The high cost, however, will be a huge downturn for a lot of people. As an affiliate marketer myself, I wouldn’t like to promote this product. But that boils down to personal preferences really. I would rather prefer your recommendation. I believe that has more potential and offers greater returns for whoever gets involved with it

    • Since I don’t have small children around, I wasn’t familiar with Matilda Jane either.  I agree with you about the high cost.  Even though the clothing seems to be well-made, it would take real effort just to earn your investment back.  Starting an online business is lots more cost effective, and has the potential of providing a much better income without lots of the hassles that comes with an MLM.

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it!
