The Internet Specials offers items with up to 60% off.  The Customer Specials offered 60% with purchase.

Customer Reviews

Customer reviews on the site regarding the quality of the books are also good.  They seem very pleased with the value of the books they receive for the price. Prices fit into the $7.99 to 15.00 range in U.S. Dollars and seems quite reasonable.

I would agree that the books are worth the price. Information about joining Usborne Books is below.

Important to Know

Perhaps most important is the consultant guide that will come in your kit.  You’ll also have access to online training, and your team leader, who is also responsible for training.

The Business Model

The company suggests the following four ways to making your business a profitable one.

  • Parties.  (Can be held both in the home and online.)
  • Book Fairs.  (You set up a display, plus offer online access for private or public institutions, including hospitals, preschools, and home school groups.)
  • Fundraisers
  • Literacy for a lifetime.

Some of these opportunities offer up to 50% in free books based on sales volume.

Can You Make a Living with Usborne Books?

Like most other business opportunities, a lot of the answer depends on you!

  • How motivated are you?
  • How much experience do you have in sales and marketing?
  • How much time do you have to invest on a regular basis?

I believe in order to earn a respectable part-time income, you’re going to need to build a strong foundation that includes lots of book fairs and fundraisers.  If you are working toward a full-time income, building a strong team will also be mandatory.

The Usborne literature states that you’ll earn back the cost of your kit with your first 2-3 sales.  Consultants earn 25% of each dollar sold. The average in-home party nets $100.00. As with other MLM opportunities, building your own group by becoming a team leader will net you even more.

  • You’ll also earn bonuses and awards, based on your monthly sales volume.
  • Other earning opportunities include free books and luxury vacations.
  • You are not required to meet a monthly sales quota, or carry inventory.  More on that later.

More to Consider

When taking a look at Usborne Books consultant and customer comments, the responses are all over the board.  Things are either perfect, or they’ve gone terribly wrong. The comments are mainly focused on training, inventory, shipping and customer service.

Book Quality

No one wants to spend time and energy on inferior, or unwanted products.  You can be confident you are offering your customers an excellent product.  You can also feel comfortable knowing that childrens’ books are always in demand.  They make great gifts, and are easy for grandparents, aunts and uncles to choose and give.

Training in the early days appears fairly good for most people.  However, if you’re looking for advanced training in sales and marketing, you’ll need to look for assistance outside of Usborne Books.

While the company doesn’t require you to carry inventory, your success with this company may demand it.  While you may be able to convince customers ordering at a party to wait weeks for their orders, others probably won’t be that patient.  Selling through book fairs and fundraisers is going to be a big source of income for you. People coming to these events are going to expect to leave with their items.  The only way for that to happen is if you purchase and maintain stock. This can be a major financial investment, and will require boxing, unboxing and transporting your stock back and forth to the events.

Shipping/Customer Service

Two areas that create real frustration for customers are the excessive shipping times and the way out of stock orders are handled at Usborne Books.  Customers seem to have to work way too hard to order substitutes, and the company seems to be creating real “Ill Will.” If you’re working to build a base of satisfied, happy customers who reorder on a regular basis, you want a company that will work with you, not against you.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a person who loves books, selling beautiful Usborne books seems like a great way to make money.  However, it’s going to be difficult to convince your customers to pay retail prices and shipping for Usborne books when they can find 20 pages of Usborne books available on Amazon. Many offer discounted prices and free shipping.

If you’re considering this as  a full-time money-making option, take a closer look.  Like many MLM offerings, much of the real earning potential here rests on building your own little empire.  Besides the parties, book fairs and fundraising events, you’ll have to recruit new consultants for your team and train and them.  Do you really want to base your future on the work ethics and life situations of people you have little or no control over?

The chart below reflects a recent survey of MLM experiences recently commissioned by AARP.

Pros and Cons of Usborne Books

  • You’ll be representing a well-established company.
  • You’ll be selling products that help children.
  • You’ll be selling quality products.

  • Much of your income is dependent on the motivation and work ethic of the individuals on your team.
  • You will constantly need to be recruiting and training group members while keeping your own sales volume up.
  • You are working for someone else and have no control over the products or earning structure.

If you have lots of contacts, this may be a good option for you.  If you don’t have lots of friends and family to call on, or you hate the idea of constantly chasing them to have parties for you, it’s probably not a very good idea.  Either way, you need to be aware that it’s going to take a great deal of time and energy to get it rolling. Probably more than you estimate. There are other options out there.

An Alternative to Usborne Books

If you’re putting in this much time and energy, why not build something that you own?  Something that will let you choose exactly which products you’re going to sell, or services you want to offer.  Something that you can build from the comfort or your own home, or wherever else you and your family decide to be.

Starting your own online business will allow you to chart your own future without depending on anyone else.

If doing something with books seems like a good fit for you, why not go big?  Take a look at my #1 recommendation for escaping the classroom.

  2. Thanks for sharing a good review to know more about Usborne Books at Home, as I’m looking for a way to start working from home, I thought the MLM business model could be an opportunity to start making some side money.

I didn’t know selling books could be another opportunity in the MLM.  As someone who loves to read, I think this is a good idea to get parents to buy some books for children.  I think making parties to tell your friends about your book selling business is a good idea too.

But as I’m looking for a way to start my own business, after reading your review, I see there’s not many chances to make money from this MLM business if someone is thinking to make a full income from it.

I see you recommend another business opportunity here in your post to start my own business with more chances to build a good business where I can make a full income from it.  I’ll take a look at it.

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed the article.  I agree that it’s a great goal to get parents to buy books for their children.  These books are excellent quality.  However, MLMs are a difficult way to make money.  As you noticed from the chart, very few people make real money, no matter what they’re selling.  The company I recommended is an excellent option.  I know you’ll like what you see!

Thanks for joining the conversation; I appreciate it.
